What is the Salary for CSIR Technician 2026?
The post carries Pay Matrix Level-2 of the 7th Central Pay Commission, with the pay band stated in the notification as:
₹19,900 – ₹63,200 per month (Group-C, Pay Matrix Level-2)
- Starting Basic Pay: ₹19,900 per month
- Maximum in the pay level: ₹63,200 per month
Beyond the basic pay, you receive House Rent Allowance and Travelling Allowance at Central Government rates applicable at your place of posting. CSIR also gives Leave Travel Concession, reimbursement of medical expenses and Children’s Education Allowance as per its own rules. Residential accommodation may be provided under the CSIR Residence Allotment Rules depending on availability — in that case HRA is not paid separately.
New entrants are covered by the National Pension System. One more encouraging point: CSIR runs an Assessment Promotion Scheme for technical and support staff, which gives you a clear path to move up in grade without waiting endlessly for vacancies.
What is the Selection Process for CSIR Technician 2026?
There are three main hurdles, and each one is very manageable if you are steady in your preparation.
- Screening by a Screening Committee, which fixes its own shortlisting criteria.
- Trade Test, which is qualifying in nature — you only need to clear the threshold marks fixed by the Selection Committee.
- Competitive Written Examination with three papers, with a combined duration of 2 hours 30 minutes.
If you are already working in a Government department, an autonomous body or a PSU, you must produce a No Objection Certificate from your present employer at the time of the Trade Test — without it you will not be allowed to appear.
An important rule to understand: Paper-II and Paper-III are evaluated only if you score the minimum threshold in Paper-I. And the final merit list is prepared only on the marks of Paper-II and Paper-III — Paper-I is your gateway, not your score.
What is the Exam Pattern for CSIR Technician Written Test 2026?
The exam is OMR-based or computer-based, objective type, with 150 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes. Questions are set in both English and Hindi, except the English Language section. The standard of the paper is SSC + ITI or 12th level.
| Paper | Subject | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| Paper-I (1 hour) | Mental Ability Test | 50 |
| Paper-II (30 min total) | General Awareness | 25 |
| Paper-II (30 min total) | English Language | 25 |
| Paper-III (1 hour) | Concerned Subject / Trade | 50 |
Paper-I carries 2 marks per correct answer with no negative marking. Paper-II and Paper-III carry 3 marks per correct answer with 1 negative mark for each wrong answer, so answer carefully in those two. The detailed syllabus for the Trade Test and Paper-III will be published on the CSIR website in due course — meanwhile you can plan your preparation using our exam syllabus and study resources.
