HAL Trainee Recruitment 2026 Notification: Eligibility, Exam Pattern and Pay Scale Explained

Every engineering student who has watched a Tejas fighter take off has quietly wondered what it would be like to build one. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a Maharatna defence PSU under the Ministry of Defence, has opened that door with 120 vacancies for Design Trainee (DT) and Management Trainee (MT) posts. Trainees draw a basic pay of ₹50,000 per month during training and are absorbed as Engineers in the Grade-II scale of ₹50,000 – ₹1,60,000. For anyone tracking PSU recruitment notifications, this is one of the biggest openings of the year.

The online application window opened on 29 July 2026 and closes on 14 August 2026 at 1400 hrs — barely two weeks, so do not delay. Only regular full-time B.E./B.Tech holders in the notified branches can apply, and HAL has published a full tentative schedule right through to induction. In this article we have covered the discipline-wise vacancies, marks criteria, exam pattern, fee, bond and the full timeline. Read it carefully — GovtJobsAlert.in has put every date in one place for you.

What is the Eligibility Criteria for HAL Trainee Recruitment 2026?

HAL is strict on two things — a regular full-time degree and the minimum aggregate percentage. Part-time, correspondence, e-learning and distance education courses are not eligible.

Educational Qualification

A regular, full-time Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Technology from a recognised University or Institution under the 10+2+4 pattern (10+3+3 for lateral entry), in the notified branch.

  • Design Trainee branches: Aeronautical, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Mechanical, Computer Science and Metallurgy
  • Management Trainee branches: Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Computer Science, Metallurgy, Production and Civil

Each branch also covers its allied specialisations — for example, Electronics includes Electronics & Communication, Electronics & Telecommunication and VLSI Design & Technology, while Computer Science includes Information Technology, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Cyber Security streams. Candidates with a 5-year Integrated Degree in a notified branch are also eligible. After all relaxations, age must not exceed 56 years for PwBD and 55 years for other candidates.

What is the Salary for HAL Design & Management Trainee 2026?

The pay is one of the strongest parts of this notification, because the money starts from day one of training — you are not an unpaid apprentice here.

  • Basic Pay during training: ₹50,000 per month
  • Variable Dearness Allowance: payable over and above basic pay
  • Canteen Allowance: payable during training
  • Bachelor Accommodation: admissible during training as per company rules
  • Pay Scale after absorption: ₹50,000 – ₹1,60,000 as Engineer Grade-II

Trainees undergo 52 weeks of training on a basic pay of ₹50,000 per month plus allowances, and on successful completion are absorbed as Engineers in the ₹50,000 – ₹1,60,000 Grade-II scale.

After absorption you also get perks and allowances under the cafeteria system, company accommodation or HRA, Performance Related Pay, medical facilities, Provident Fund, gratuity and other superannuation benefits. One condition to note: selected candidates must sign a service agreement bond to serve HAL for 5 years (excluding training). Breaking it makes you liable to reimburse training expenses up to a maximum of ₹15,00,000.

What is the Selection Process for HAL Trainee Recruitment 2026?

The selection runs in five clear stages, and the final merit gives most of the weight to your written test.

Stage 1: Online Computer Based Test

A national-level online test of two and a half hours with 160 multiple-choice questions20 questions on General Awareness, 40 on English & Reasoning and 100 on your concerned discipline. You may take the test in Hindi or English, and the choice made at the time of applying cannot be changed later. Build your preparation around the discipline paper, since it carries the largest share. You can plan your revision using our exam syllabus and pattern guides.

Stage 2: Shortlisting for Interview

Candidates are shortlisted in the ratio of 1:5 to the number of vacancies in each discipline and category, in order of merit in the online test.

Stage 3: Personal Interview

Interviews are tentatively scheduled at Bengaluru from 21 to 25 September 2026. You must secure at least 50% marks each in the written test and the interview to qualify, with relaxation for reserved categories as per rules. The final merit list is then prepared with 85% weightage for the online test and 15% for the interview.

Stage 4: Document Verification

Caste, income and asset, and disability certificates must be produced at the interview in the prescribed Central Government format, and the conversion certificate must come from your University or Institute. Two points decide whether an OBC-NCL claim survives: your Central OBC (NCL) certificate must not be older than 6 months as on 14 August 2026, and candidates falling in the creamy layer are not entitled to OBC-NCL benefits and must apply as UR. EWS candidates need an Income and Asset Certificate valid for FY 2026-27, prepared on verification for FY 2025-26. Your category once filled in the application form cannot be changed later. Candidates already working in Government, PSU or autonomous bodies must bring a No Objection Certificate, failing which they will not be allowed to appear.

Stage 5: Pre-Employment Medical Examination

All provisionally selected candidates, including PwBD candidates, undergo a medical examination tentatively between 9 and 15 October 2026. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory report from the company’s doctor, whose decision is final and binding, and no relaxation in health standards is allowed. A second, pre-induction document verification follows at Bengaluru in late October before training begins.

How to Apply Online for HAL Recruitment 2026: Step-by-Step Guide

Applications are accepted online only. Before starting, keep ready a valid e-mail ID that stays active through the process, a passport size colour photograph in JPG under 180 KB, your Aadhaar number, semester-wise marks and employment details if any.

  1. Visit the HAL careers section and open the Design Trainee / Management Trainee 2026 link (link in Essential Links below).
  2. Select the post you want to apply for — applying for more than one post leads to rejection and the application fee paid stands forfeited.
  3. Enter and re-enter a valid e-mail ID for OTP-based registration.
  4. Fill in the eligibility details and upload your photograph to generate a unique application number — note that eligibility details once submitted cannot be edited.
  5. Complete the personal and qualification details, using the edit option to correct anything before final submission.
  6. SC, ST, PwBD and internal candidates finish here — print the application confirmation page.
  7. UR, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates proceed to the payment gateway and pay the application fee.
  8. Print the application confirmation page after successful payment and keep it safely for future reference.

Three more things worth knowing: only Indian nationals are eligible, you must choose three preferred test cities in the form and no change of preference is considered later, and you must carry an original photo ID to the test centre or you will not be allowed to appear. Apply well before the deadline — heavy traffic on the last day regularly causes login failures.
