HPPSC Medical Officer Recruitment 2026: Himachal Pradesh Vacancy, Eligibility and Exam Pattern

The Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC) has opened online applications for 228 posts of Medical Officer (General Wing) in the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Himachal Pradesh. These are Group-A posts, and the selected doctors are engaged as Job Trainees on fixed emoluments of Rs 34,000 per month. If you hold a recognised medical qualification and have finished your compulsory internship, this is one of the largest single openings for doctors in the hill state this year, and it is worth a careful read if you are tracking government jobs in Himachal Pradesh.

The form is filled online through the Commission’s One Time Registration portal, and the window closes on 16 October 2026 at 11:59 PM — the same deadline applies to the fee. Every candidate pays Rs 600, whatever the category or gender. In this guide from GovtJobsAlert.in you will find the full category-wise split, the age rule with its own cut-off date, the two-paper exam pattern with an unusual negative-marking rule, and the conditions that quietly end a candidature. Read it fully before you start the form.

What is the Eligibility Criteria for HPPSC Medical Officer Recruitment 2026?

HPPSC Medical Officer Educational Qualification 2026

RequirementWhat the notification says
Essential (i)A recognised medical qualification included in the First or Second Schedule, or Part-II of the Third Schedule (other than licentiate qualifications), of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956
Essential (ii)Completion of the compulsory rotating internship
For Part-II holdersMust also fulfil the conditions in sub-section (3) of Section 13 of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956
DesirablePost Graduate Degree or Diploma under the same Schedules, or a post graduate qualification from an institution listed in Appendix-A of the notification
DesirableKnowledge of the customs, manners and dialects of Himachal Pradesh

Your qualification is judged as on the closing date, not the date you press submit. If you claim a degree as an equivalent qualification, you must produce the order (with number and date) under which the authority treated it as equivalent — without it the application is liable to be rejected. HPPSC Medical Officer Age Limit 2026 and Age Relaxation

DetailRule
Minimum Age18 years
Maximum Age45 years
Age reckoned as on1 January 2026
Bonafide SC, ST, OBC, WFF and Persons with disabilities of HP5 years relaxation, only if a post is reserved for that category
HP Government employees and Ex-Servicemen of HPAs per Government instructions issued from time to time

🎂 Not sure if you meet the age criteria? Use our free Age Calculator for Government Exams to find your exact age on the cut-off date and instantly check your eligibility — including any age relaxation you qualify for. →

Two things here catch people out. The cut-off is 1 January 2026, not the closing date, so work your exact age out on that day. And reserved category candidates of states other than Himachal Pradesh must apply as unreserved — upper age relaxation is not applicable to them. Only the date of birth recorded on your matriculation certificate is accepted, and no request to change it will be granted later.

What is the Salary for HPPSC Medical Officer 2026?

This recruitment is made under the Himachal Pradesh job trainee scheme, so the advertisement states a fixed monthly amount rather than a 7th CPC pay level.

ComponentAmount
Emoluments for Job TraineeRs 34,000 per month

The advertisement lists no separate allowance for the trainee period, so Rs 34,000 per month is the figure the Commission has committed to. The engagement follows the Department of Personnel notification dated 19 July 2025 on job trainees on a fixed amount.

For a young doctor this is still a strong start — Group-A work inside the Himachal health service. Just go in clear about the trainee terms.

What is the Selection Process for HPPSC Medical Officer 2026?

StageDetail
Stage 1Objective type Screening Test and Descriptive Subject Aptitude Test
Stage 2Personality Test of 30 marks, held only at the Commission’s office in Shimla
Small fieldWhere the ratio of eligible candidates to posts is six or below, all of them are called directly for the Personality Test
PaperPattern
Paper-IComputer Based Test or offline screening test, 1 hour, 100 marks, objective MCQs
Paper-I subjectsHP General Knowledge 30, National and International Affairs 30, Hindi 20, English 20
Paper-IIDescriptive Subject Aptitude Test, 3 hours, 120 marks
SessionBoth papers are held on the same day, in morning and evening sessions
Final rankingMarks in the SAT (120) plus the Personality Test (30)

The marking rule in Paper-I deserves a second read. A wrong answer costs one fourth (0.25) of that question’s marks, the same penalty applies if you mark more than one option, and — this is the part candidates miss — the same penalty applies to a question you leave blank. Every question carries options A to D plus an option ‘E’ for “do not wish to answer”. If you do not know an answer, you must actively choose E.

Paper-II answer sheets are evaluated only on the merit of Paper-I, and no candidate scoring zero or negative marks in Paper-I forms part of the merit list. You need 45% in the SAT (40% for reserved categories) to qualify for the Personality Test, and 40% there (30% for reserved categories) — those securing less are disqualified from the remaining selection process. The detailed Paper-II syllabus is on the Commission’s website; you can also follow our exam syllabus and pattern updates.
