Eligibility Criteria — JKPSC Assistant Professor Recruitment 2026
Educational Qualification
Read this part slowly, because the rules differ slightly for each post. The full text is in the notification PDF linked below.
- Assistant Professor (general subjects): Master’s Degree with 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/Differently-abled candidates and for Ph.D holders who completed their Master’s before 19 September 1991), calculated excluding any grace marks, in the concerned, relevant or allied subject from an Indian university or an equivalent accredited foreign degree, plus a pass in NET conducted by UGC or CSIR, or an accredited SLET/SET.
- Ph.D holders: a Ph.D awarded in accordance with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for award of M.Phil/Ph.D Degree) Regulations 2009 or 2016 exempts you from NET/SLET/SET outright — no extra conditions attached. Only candidates who registered for the Ph.D programme before 11 July 2009 must additionally satisfy the notification’s five conditions: the degree awarded in regular mode by a UGC/AIU-recognised university, the thesis evaluated by at least two external examiners, an open Ph.D viva-voce, two research papers from the Ph.D work with at least one in a refereed journal, and two papers presented at UGC/ICSSR/CSIR-sponsored conferences — certified by the Registrar or Dean (Academic Affairs).
- Assistant Professor (Computer Application): Master’s Degree in the relevant subject with at least 60% marks from an Indian university, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university (55%, excluding grace marks, for SC/ST/Differently-abled candidates and for Ph.D holders who obtained their Master’s before 19 September 1991), plus NET/SLET/SET or an eligible Ph.D — note this is a higher percentage than the other subjects.
- Librarian: Master’s Degree in Library Science, Information Science or Documentation Science, or an equivalent professional degree, with at least 55% marks (50%, excluding grace marks, for SC/ST/Differently-abled candidates and for Ph.D holders who obtained their Master’s before 19 September 1991), a consistently good academic record and knowledge of library computerisation, plus NET/SLET/SET or an eligible Ph.D.
- College Director of Physical Education & Sports: Master’s degree in Physical Education and Sports / Physical Education / Sports Science with 55% marks (50%, excluding grace marks, for SC/ST/Differently-abled candidates and for Ph.D holders who obtained their Master’s before 19 September 1991), a record of having represented the university or college at inter-university or inter-collegiate competitions of the state and/or national championships, NET/SLET/SET or an eligible Ph.D, and a pass in the physical fitness test under UGC Regulations 2018. An Asian Games or Commonwealth Games medal winner with a post-graduate degree is also eligible.
- Music: in addition to the Master’s route, the notification accepts a traditional and professional artist with highly commendable professional achievement in the subject who meets all four of its listed conditions — studied under noted or reputed traditional masters or artists, has been an “A” grade artist of AIR/Doordarshan, has the ability to explain the logical reasoning of the subject, and has adequate knowledge to teach theory with illustrations in the discipline.
- Subjects where no NET/SLET/SET is held: if UGC, CSIR or an accredited SLET/SET agency does not conduct a test in your Master’s discipline, NET/SLET/SET is not required at all for that subject. This matters for disciplines such as Dogri, Functional English, Islamic Studies and Clinical Bio Chemistry.
- Foreign Ph.D route: a Ph.D from a foreign university or institution ranked among the top 500 in the world at any time by QS, Times Higher Education (THE) or the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU, Shanghai Jiao Tong University) is separately accepted for Assistant Professor and for Assistant Professor (Computer Application).
If you are a teaching and faculty job aspirant, keep your NET/SET certificate and Ph.D notification scanned and ready before you start the form.
Age Limit
Age is counted as on 1 January 2026. The notification prints only the maximum age for each category — no minimum age in years is stated, but the table requires that candidates must not be born after 01.01.2008.
| Category | Maximum Age | Not Born Before |
|---|---|---|
| Open Merit (OM) | 40 years | 01.01.1986 |
| Reserved categories | 43 years | 01.01.1983 |
| In-service / Government candidates | 40 years | 01.01.1986 |
| Physically Challenged | 42 years | 01.01.1982 |
Every row also requires that you were not born after 01.01.2008. One caution: for the Physically Challenged row the notification prints an age limit of 42 years but a “not born before” date of 01.01.1982, which works out to 44 years. Please confirm that row from the official notification PDF before relying on it.

Domicile Requirement
Only domiciles of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir may apply. You must hold a valid Domicile Certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed format. A certificate issued after the last date of application will not be accepted, so arrange it early.
What is the Salary for JKPSC Assistant Professor 2026?
All 205 posts — Assistant Professor, Librarian and College Director of Physical Education & Sports alike — are placed in the same pay band.
- Pay Level: Level-10 of the pay matrix
- Printed pay line in the notification: “Pay Band = Level-10 (Rs 577000-182400)”
- Applies to: every subject and every post in this advertisement — no separate pay is printed for any individual discipline
The notification prints the Level-10 figures exactly as shown above. Please confirm the exact pay range from the official notification PDF linked in the Essential Links section before you plan your finances.
Along with the pay matrix salary, college teachers in Jammu & Kashmir receive Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and the other allowances admissible to UT Government employees, revised from time to time. Beyond the money, an Assistant Professor post gives you research freedom, long vacations and a respected, permanent career.
What is the Selection Process for JKPSC Assistant Professor 2026?
The notification itself says only that selection is made in terms of Rule 45 of the J&K Public Service Commission (Business & Procedure) Rules, 2021, and it prescribes no interview stage. In practice that means a written examination, weightage claimed for your academic credentials under those Rules, and document verification — the detailed weightage scheme sits in the Rules, not in this notification.
Stage 1: Written Examination
A single paper of 3 hours carrying 120 multiple choice questions. The subject-wise syllabus is available on the Commission’s website. The syllabus for the College Director of Physical Education and Sports post will be notified separately. Negative marking and qualifying marks are not stated in this notification. You can track exam pattern updates on our syllabus and exam pattern page.
Stage 2: Weightage for Academic Credentials
This is where your extra work pays off. Marks are given for documents you upload with the form — M.Phil certificate with result notification, Ph.D notification, a JRF, NET, SET or SLET certificate, experience certificates (up to 5 leaves), books published as first or second author, a Gold Medal for overall first position, National/State/Institution awards, research papers as first, second or corresponding author, and a Post-Doctorate of at least one year. Upload everything at form-filling stage — no document is accepted after the cut-off date.
Stage 3: Document Verification
Original certificates are checked at this stage. Your candidature stays provisional until then, because the Commission does not do a detailed scrutiny before the written exam.
The written examination will be held only at Srinagar and Jammu centres. You must choose your centre in the form, allotment is at the Commission’s discretion, and a change of centre is not permitted later.
