There is negative marking in the Preliminary Examination: one-third of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for every wrong answer, and a multiple answer counts as wrong. A candidate scoring zero or negative marks in Paper-I is not qualified, however well Paper-II went. Roughly twenty times the number of vacancies are admitted to the Mains, and the Commission calls no more than three times the notified vacancies for the Personality Test. Your final rank comes only from the Main Examination plus the Personality Test.
