How Many Candidates Appeared in the RRB Technician CEN 02/2025 CBT?

The Railway Recruitment Boards have put out two separate notices, both dated 1 September 2026, giving the community-wise count of “Present Applicants” — the candidates who actually sat in the exam hall for the Computer Based Test. One notice covers Technician Grade-I (Signal) and the other covers Technician Grade-III. Read them as two different exams, because that is what they are: different pay levels, different qualifications and different boards. Nothing in one table belongs to the other.

Add the two and you get 4,94,638 candidates who appeared across both cadres. One column trips readers every single year, so please read this line twice: the ExSM and PwBD figures are horizontal, not extra. Those 417 Ex-Servicemen and 459 PwBD candidates in Grade-I are already sitting inside the UR, SC, ST, OBC and EWS numbers of the very same row. Never add them on top of the total — the notice itself says the community-wise break-up includes the count of Ex-Servicemen and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities.

The busiest boards for Grade-I (Signal) were Mumbai (8,786), Bhopal (7,886) and Chennai (5,805), while Siliguri (526) and Jammu-Srinagar (700) saw the smallest turnouts among the boards that were listed. Two things about this table. First, Gorakhpur, Patna and Secunderabad have no row at all in the Grade-I (Signal) notice, so RRB has published no figure for them — treat that as “not printed”, not as a zero we can vouch for. Second, two rows look odd and are reproduced here exactly as printed: Kolkata shows 0 in UR, SC, ST and OBC with 134 in EWS, and Prayagraj shows 0 in UR, ST and OBC with 559 in SC and 19 in EWS. We have not smoothed these out or filled any gap with an invented number.

How Many Candidates Appeared in the Technician Grade-III CBT? RRB-Wise List

20 boards appear in the Technician Grade-III notice, and the scale is completely different. Chennai alone recorded 91,570 candidates — almost double the entire Grade-I (Signal) exam put together.

After Chennai, the heaviest boards were Mumbai (74,297), Kolkata (62,983) and Chandigarh (30,659). At the other end, Patna recorded just 105 candidates and Malda 2,088 — so if you took the Grade-III paper under a small board, the pool you were ranked against was genuinely small. Muzaffarpur has no row in the Grade-III notice. As with the missing Grade-I boards, that is how the notice is printed, and we have not added a zero row to make the two tables match each other.

What Do the RRB Technician CEN 02/2025 CBT Attendance Numbers Mean for You?

Put these figures next to the application numbers RRB released earlier for the same CEN — 1,06,084 applications for Grade-I (Signal) and 7,35,440 for Grade-III — and the real story appears. Only about 43 out of every 100 Grade-I applicants turned up, and about 61 out of every 100 for Grade-III. A huge slice of your “competition” never walked into the exam hall at all.

Now compare with the seats. CEN 02/2025 was notified for 183 Technician Grade-I (Signal) posts and 6,055 Technician Grade-III posts. Against the candidates who actually appeared, that works out to roughly 252 candidates per seat in Grade-I (Signal) and roughly 74 per seat in Grade-III — still tough, but nowhere near as frightening as the raw application figures made it look. If you sat for Grade-III, your odds were far better than the headline number suggested.

Both notices also repeat the RRB’s standard warning, and it is worth taking seriously: beware of touts who promise selection in return for money. The RRB recruitment process is fully computerised and selection is purely on merit — nobody can arrange a Technician job for you.

For Technician Grade-III, the busiest boards were Chennai (1,40,671), Mumbai (1,17,474) and Kolkata (1,06,249). For Technician Grade-I (Signal), the highest numbers came from Bhopal (19,859), Mumbai (19,025) and Chennai (13,825). A few boards recorded zero valid applications for one cadre — Gorakhpur, Patna and Secunderabad show nil for Technician Grade-I (Signal), and Muzaffarpur shows nil for Technician Grade-III.

As the RRB notice explains, the community-wise break-up already includes the Ex-Servicemen (ExSM) and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) counts — these are not extra applications on top of the total.

What Do These Numbers Mean for Your Competition?

Let us put the figures next to the vacancies. CEN 02/2025 was notified for 6,238 posts in all — 183 for Technician Grade-I (Signal) and 6,055 for Technician Grade-III. Comparing that with the applications received:

• Technician Grade-I (Signal): about 580 applicants for every 1 vacancy
• Technician Grade-III: about 121 applicants for every 1 vacancy
• Overall (CEN 02/2025): nearly 135 applicants for every 1 vacancy

Don’t let these numbers scare you. Remember that a very large share of applicants never appear for the CBT at all, and many more are not seriously prepared. Introduction to RRB Technician Recruitment 2025

The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, have released a massive recruitment drive through the Detailed Centralised Employment Notification (CEN) No. 02/2025. This notification invited online applications for a total of 6238 posts of Technician Grade I Signal and various categories of Technician Grade III. The application window ran from June 28, 2025 to July 28, 2025 (Extended Up to 07.08.2025) and is now closed. The CBT has already been held and the result is out, so the eligibility, vacancy and application details in this article are kept for reference.

Eligibility Criteria for RRB Technician 2025

Three gates: educational qualification as on the closing date, age as on 1 July 2025, the post’s medical standard.

Educational Qualification

The required qualifications vary depending on the post.

• For Technician Grade-I Signal (Level-5):
  • A Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Physics / Electronics / Computer Science / Information Technology / Instrumentation from a recognized University/Institute. OR
  • A three-year Diploma in Engineering in the above-mentioned basic streams or a combination thereof. OR
  • A Degree in Engineering in the above-mentioned basic streams or a combination thereof.
• For Technician Grade-III (Level-2):
  • Matriculation / SSLC plus ITI from an NCVT/SCVT institution in the trade prescribed for that post — the trades run well beyond Fitter and Welder to Tailor, Upholsterer, Refrigeration & AC Mechanic, Millwright, Crane Operator, Foundryman and Pattern Maker, and are listed post by post in Annexure A. OR
  • Matriculation / SSLC plus Course Completed Act Apprenticeship (CCAA) in the relevant trades.
  • For Technician Grade III (S&T), an alternative qualification of 10+2 with Physics and Maths is also acceptable.

Note: Candidates awaiting their final results for the prescribed qualification are not eligible to apply.

Age Limit (as on July 1, 2025)

The age limits for the posts are as follows:

• For Technician Grade-I Signal: 18 to 33 years
• For Technician Grade-III: 18 to 30 years

Age Relaxation applied, on production of the requisite certificates, to these groups — and to four more set out in the table below:

• SC/ST: 5 years
• OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years
• Ex-Servicemen (6 months’ service after attestation): 3 (UR/EWS), 6 (OBC-NCL) or 8 (SC/ST) years, after deducting service length.
• PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disabilities): 10 years (UR/EWS), 13 (OBC-NCL), 15 (SC/ST).
• Women widowed, divorced or judicially separated, not remarried: Up to 35 years (UR/EWS), 38 (OBC-NCL), 40 (SC/ST).

Salary and Benefits (Pay Scale)

Selected candidates draw 7th CPC pay; during prescribed training only a stipend is paid.

In addition to the initial pay, candidates will receive a comprehensive benefits package as per Indian Railways rules, which includes:

• Other Allowances: Depending on the nature of the job and posting location, employees may also be eligible for Night Duty Allowance, Overtime Allowance, and other special allowances.
• Dearness Allowance (DA): This is a cost of living adjustment allowance paid to government employees.
• House Rent Allowance (HRA): Provided to employees for their rental accommodation, the rate varies based on the city of posting (classified as X, Y, or Z).
• Transport Allowance (TA): Given to cover the commute between residence and place of work.
• Medical Benefits: Employees and their dependents are covered under the Railway Employees Liberalized Health Scheme (RELHS) for medical treatment in railway and recognized hospitals.
• Pension Scheme: Employees will be covered under the National Pension System (NPS).
• Pass and Privilege Ticket Orders (PTOs): Employees and their families are entitled to free or concessional railway tickets for travel across India.
• Educational Assistance: Assistance is provided for the education of the children of railway employees.

RRB Technician Selection Process 2025

The recruitment process consisted of the following stages:

1. Computer Based Test (CBT): Separate CBTs were held for each pay level (Level-5 and Level-2) — 100 questions in 90 minutes, negative marking of 1/3rd mark per wrong answer.
2. Document Verification (DV): Shortlisting is done RRB-wise, at 1:1 of that RRB’s own vacancies, on CBT merit.
3. Medical Examination (ME): The post’s own standard must be passed; if unfit, a lower-preferred post you pass may still be allotted.

Everyone other than Indian citizens must produce a Government of India certificate of eligibility at DV, failing which the candidature is rejected.	Para 4.0
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) claim	Certificate in the Annexure II format, issued on or after 01.04.2025 and not later than the closing date, plus an Annexure IIA self-declaration at DV. Creamy-layer OBCs get nothing; OBCs in a State list but not the central list are not eligible for reservation. Failure means the candidate is treated as UR.	Paras 8.4–8.7
EWS claim	Family gross annual income below Rs. 8 lakh for FY 2024-25, and excluded irrespective of income if the family holds 5 acres or more of agricultural land, a flat of 1,000 sq ft or more, a 100 sq yd plot in a notified municipality, or a 200 sq yd plot elsewhere. Income & Asset Certificate in the Annexure III format.	Para 8.13
EBC (Economically Backward Class) fee concession	Annual family income below Rs. 50,000, proved by an Annexure IIIA income certificate, a BPL card, an Izzat MST or a certificate under a recognised central poverty-alleviation programme issued on or before 28.07.2025 and produced in original at DV, failing which the candidature is rejected. EBC is not OBC and not EWS, and gives fee concession only — no job reservation.	Paras 7.0, 7.3, 8.1
Minority fee concession	Minorities are Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Zoroastrians (Parsis). An affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper in the Annexure IV format must be produced at DV, failing which the candidature is rejected.	Para 7.2
Refund of the examination fee	Paid only to candidates who attended the CBT, and only into the bank details entered in the application form. No refund for wrong or incomplete bank details, or for erroneous, incomplete or rejected applications. Applications submitted without the fee are summarily rejected. Serving Central/State Government, Railway or PSU employees	May apply directly after informing the employer, but must produce an NOC on the date of DV, failing which the candidature is cancelled. If the employer writes in withholding permission, the application/candidature is liable to be rejected.	Para 12.0
Modifying a submitted application	Rs. 250 non-refundable for each modification, payable by every candidate regardless of community. Switching from SC/ST, or from ExSM/Female/Transgender/PwBD, to a full-fee category needed a further Rs. 250 fee difference, failing which the modified application was not accepted. The Create-an-Account details and the chosen RRB could never be changed.	Para 17.0, Instruction (xv)
Document Verification attendance	Absence at DV forfeits the candidature. No extra time is given to produce originals on the DV date; two sets of self-attested photocopies plus originals are required, and certificates not in English or Hindi need a self-attested translation.	Para 20.0 (a)–(e)
Unfair means, false information or suppressed facts	Lifetime debarment from all RRB and RRC examinations, debarment from appointment in the Railways, and dismissal from service if already appointed — plus legal action under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. Are the stages and the vacancy count final?	No. RRBs reserve the right to hold additional CBTs and additional DV without assigning a reason, to reschedule any stage, and to cancel part or the whole of the process. Vacancies are provisional and may increase, decrease or become NIL.	Paras 1.10, 1.11, 22.0(c)
Pay during training	Selected candidates undergo training wherever prescribed and are paid only a stipend during the training period. They also execute a Security and/or Indemnity Bond where necessary.	Paras 1.15, 1.16
Posting and transfer after appointment	No transfer request to another Railway is registered until the appointee completes at least 5 to 10 years of service — so the choice of RRB was effectively irreversible. Appointees are also liable for active service in the Railway Engineers Unit of the Territorial Army.	Paras 1.17, 1.18
Scribe and compensatory time (PwBD)	Available to candidates with blindness, locomotor disability (both arms) or cerebral palsy, and to others on a CMO/Civil Surgeon certificate; also to candidates below 40% disability with a writing limitation. 20 minutes per hour of compensatory time, allowed even to eligible candidates who do not use a scribe. The scribe had to be OTR-registered at rrbapply.gov.in, confirmed in the 5-day window after the modification window, one candidate per scribe, qualification one level below the CEN minimum. Free travel pass (SC & ST)	A free sleeper-class railway pass is printed on the e-call letter, on request, for CBT/DV/ME. The original community certificate and photo ID must be carried during the journey, failing which the candidate is treated as travelling without ticket. Misuse leads to rejection of candidature and debarment.	Paras 1.20, 19.0(e)
Signature upload	Black ink on white paper, in running handwriting — not block or capital letters, 30–49 KB JPG/JPEG, minimum 140×60 px. Non-white background, non-black ink, block capitals, poor resolution, a partial signature or a thumb impression make the application liable to rejection at any stage. The signature must match the one captured at CBT, DV, ME and appointment.	Para 14.5.1
Exam city, centre, date and shift	Allotted on technical and logistical feasibility; candidates may have to travel to other cities or states. No change of date, centre or shift is allowed under any circumstances. The city is intimated about 10 days in advance and the e-call letter is available about 4 days before the CBT. Medically unfit for a higher-preferred post	Not the end of the process. Where a candidate is unfit for higher-preferred posts but fit for a lower-preferred post in the same pay level, allotment is made to the post the candidate is medically fit for, subject to merit, eligibility and vacancy at the time of allotment. Merged Post Categories (MPCs)	12 of the 29 Technician Gr-III categories are MPCs: each one bundles several post designations that share identical post parameters. A candidate empanelled against an MPC may be assigned any designation, department and sub-department under that MPC on reporting to the allotted Zonal Railway. Post preferences and partial options	Options once exercised were final and no change was entertained. A candidate who left some Zonal Railways/PUs or posts unoptioned was treated as unwilling for them and was considered only for the ones actually opted, subject to the vacancy position at the time of allotment. Still serving in the armed forces on the closing date	Such candidates could claim Ex-Servicemen benefits by furnishing an Annexure VI(A) ‘Employment Certificate with probable date of discharge from service’, valid as on the closing date, and every ExSM claimant had to submit the Annexure VI self-declaration undertaking at Document Verification. No ExSM / PwBD vacancy earmarked against the post you want	Ex-Servicemen could still apply against that post’s regular vacancies, and PwBD candidates could too provided the post is suitable for their disability. In both cases age relaxation and fee exemption continued to apply. PwBD vacancies that stay unfilled are simply treated as a shortfall.	Paras 9.3, 9.4, 9.5
Selection is not appointment	RRB only recommends names; the Zonal Railway issues the offer of appointment, subject to vacancy availability, to all eligibility criteria and to verification of antecedents and character. Live photograph in the application	Non-white, preferably dark clothing for contrast; camera at eye level, the whole face centred in the frame, and no cap, mask or spectacles. Photographing an existing printed or digital photo meant summary rejection, and a blurred, illegible or non-compliant photo makes the candidature liable to rejection at any stage. The candidate’s appearance through every stage must match this photograph.	Paras 1.7, 14.4, 18.0(a)(ii)
Medium of the CBT	English, Hindi and 13 regional languages (Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu). Name changed since Matriculation	Both the Matriculation name and the changed name had to be entered in the application, every other detail had to match the Matriculation certificate, and the change had to be dated before the application was submitted. A Gazette Notification (or other legal document) with a photo ID in the changed name had to be produced at the CBT and at DV.	Para 1.6(a), (b); FAQ Q.17
Technician Grade-I Signal medical standard	Fixed at B-1 for the single Level-5 post, not post-wise: distance vision 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (lens power not exceeding 4D), near vision Sn 0.6, 0.6, and must pass the colour, binocular, night and mesopic vision tests. How to Apply for RRB Technician Recruitment 2025

Applications for CEN 02/2025 are closed. This is the process candidates followed while the window was open, kept here for reference:

1. Create an Account: Visit any official RRB website (Link provided below) and click on the link for CEN 02/2025. First, ‘Create an Account’ using a valid mobile number and email ID. If you already have an account from a previous RRB recruitment, you can use the same credentials.
2. Fill the Application Form: Log in and fill out the online application form with accurate personal, educational, and contact details.
3. Choose RRB & Post Preference: Only one RRB could be chosen per pay level (see the bars table above), with an order of preference for the posts notified under it.
4. Upload Documents:
   • Live Photograph: A live photograph was captured by webcam or phone camera — non-white, preferably dark clothing, no cap, mask or spectacles.
   • Signature: Upload a scanned image of your signature (30-49 KB, JPG/JPEG).
   • SC/ST Certificate (for travel pass): If applicable, upload a PDF of your caste certificate (<400 KB).
5. Pay Application Fee: Pay the fee online via Debit Card, Credit Card, Internet Banking, or UPI.
6. Final Submission: Review your application thoroughly before final submission. Print a copy of the completed application form for your records.
