UGC NET December 2026 Notification: Eligibility, Exam Dates, Fee and How to Apply

Good news for every post-graduate who dreams of teaching in a college or doing a PhD. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the UGC NET December 2026 notification on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC). This is not a job with a fixed number of posts. It is a national eligibility test in 87 subjects that can make you eligible for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), for appointment as Assistant Professor, and for PhD admission in Indian universities and colleges. If you want a career in teaching and faculty jobs, this test is your entry ticket.

Online applications are open from 08 October 2026 to 28 October 2026 (up to 11:50 PM). The exam is planned for 14 to 19 December 2026, but NTA has said these dates are tentative. You need a Master’s degree with 55% marks (50% for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, Third gender); final-year students may apply. In this article we cover eligibility, age limit, exam pattern, fee and every rule that can cancel your candidature. Keep following GovtJobsAlert.in for every NET update.

What Are the UGC NET December 2026 Key Highlights?

NTA is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education that conducts national entrance and eligibility tests. For UGC NET, it handles the full process — application, admit card, exam and result — while UGC decides the qualifying criteria.

Category 2: Appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to PhDJRF: No / Assistant Professor: YesYes
Category 3: Admission to PhD onlyJRF: No / Assistant Professor: NoYes

If you hold a post-graduate degree, you are the main audience for this test. Appear in the subject of your Post-Graduation. If your subject is not in the NET list, you may appear in a related subject.

A few rules here matter a lot. If you qualify on the basis of a four-year undergraduate degree, you become eligible for JRF and PhD admission, but you will not be eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor. Four-year degree holders may pick any NET subject in which they want to do a PhD.

Provisional candidates must finish their Master’s with the required percentage within two years of the NET result — within one year if they qualify for PhD admission only — failing which they shall be treated as disqualified. The same one-year and two-year limits apply to students in the last year of a four-year bachelor’s degree.

Third gender candidates get the same relaxation in fee, age and eligibility as SC, ST, PwD and PwBD candidates. State-list OBC candidates who are not in the Central OBC-NCL list must choose General / Unreserved. Candidates with a foreign qualification or an Indian Post-Graduate diploma should confirm its equivalence before applying.
