India Post Staff Car Driver Recruitment 2026: 24 Tamil Nadu Posts, Eligibility and Salary
The Department of Posts (India Post) has invited applications for 24 Staff Car Driver (Ordinary Grade) posts in the Tamil Nadu Circle. The office of the Senior Manager, Mail Motor Service, Chennai is running the recruitment. It is a Group-C central government job in Pay Level 2, which means Rs 19,900 to Rs 63,200 a month plus allowances. If you hold a 10th pass certificate and LMV and HMV licences, read on.

Staff Car Driver Vacancy Details 2026 (Unit-wise)
All 24 vacancies are for one post, but they sit in different units, and the category seats differ from unit to unit. Units are allotted after selection, on merit and your preference.

Adding up the units, the seats are 13 for UR, 3 for SC, 7 for OBC and 1 for EWS. No seat is reserved for ST in any unit. Two vacancies at MMS Chennai are earmarked for Ex-servicemen. They are filled from any category and adjusted horizontally, so they are included in the 24 and are not extra. One of the three Coimbatore seats is an OBC backlog vacancy. The notification also says the number of vacancies in any unit can change, and the authority may modify or cancel the recruitment without giving a reason.
Staff Car Driver Eligibility Criteria 2026

The Home Guard or Civil Volunteer service is only desirable, so you can apply without it. The experience certificate is where many candidates slip. It must come from a Gazetted officer of a Central or State Government office where you work, or from the head of a registered firm, company, agency or institution. It must carry the full address with door number and pincode, the issuer’s name and designation, and the date of issue. The experience period must fall within the validity of your driving licence. Age is counted on 30 November 2026, the closing date, not the day you post the form. For ex-servicemen, the relaxation is applied after the military service you rendered is deducted from your actual age. If you select the Ex-servicemen category but do not enclose your service and trade proof, you are treated as a general candidate and get no age relaxation.

Staff Car Driver Selection Process 2026

Stage I has 80 questions of one mark each. Part I is General Knowledge (20 questions), Part II is General Intelligence and Reasoning (15), Part III is Simple Arithmetic (15), and Part IV is road sense, vehicle maintenance, traffic rules and signals, and environmental pollution (30). The paper is in English, Hindi and the local language where Hindi is not local.
Only candidates who qualify in Stage I can appear in Stage II. In Stage II you must qualify in each paper. One paper checks motor mechanism, such as spotting defects, minor repairs, changing wheels and inflating tyres. The other is Heavy Motor Vehicle driving, covering gear and clutch control, steering and reversing.
The minimum qualifying marks in each paper are 33% for SC and ST, 37% for OBC and EWS, and 40% for others. The final merit list is made on total marks of both stages. The number of successful candidates equals the vacancies in each category, and no wait list or panel is kept. If a selected candidate does not join, the next candidate in merit can be considered. If you do not select a category, you are treated as UR. Do not send original certificates. Send self-attested photocopies only. Applicants who are not eligible get no intimation or correspondence.

Ex-servicemen are not listed as exempt, so they pay Rs 100. The fee is not refunded. Pay it by e-payment at any computerised post office in India using the Challan Form, with E-Biller Name Senior Manager, MMS Chennai, CPMG Tamilnadu Circle, E-Biller ID 1000099022. Download the challan from the India Post website. Enter your name, address, fee amount, description and the name of the payment office. Paste the original receipt from the post office on the application form and keep the candidate’s copy.

EWS candidates need an Income and Asset certificate for the year 2025-2026. The notification gives no envelope wording. Post early, because a form that arrives after 5 PM on the last date is not considered. If the English and Hindi versions differ, the English version is final.
