What is the Selection Process for NICL Assistant 2026?

Selection happens in clear stages. Your final merit depends only on the Main Examination — the Preliminary exam is just a screening gate. Merit lists are drawn State-wise and Category-wise.

Phase I: Preliminary Examination (Online)

An objective online test of 100 questions for 100 marks in 60 minutes, with each section separately timed. Sections are English Language (30 questions, 20 minutes), Reasoning Ability (35 questions, 20 minutes) and Quantitative Aptitude (35 questions, 20 minutes). Roughly 15 times the number of vacancies are shortlisted for the next phase, state-wise and category-wise.

Phase II: Main Examination (Online)

The decisive stage — 200 questions for 200 marks in 120 minutes, again separately timed. It covers Test of Reasoning (40 marks), Test of English Language (40 marks), Test of Numerical Ability (40 marks), Test of General Awareness (40 marks) and Test of Computer Knowledge (40 marks). Your biometric data, IRIS scan and photograph are captured on the exam day.

Regional Language Test

This test carries no marks and is purely qualifying, but it is compulsory. If you cannot read, write and speak the regional language of the state printed on your call letter, you will be disqualified — so use the days before the test to sharpen the language you declared.

Marking Scheme and Final Merit

There is negative marking of one-fourth mark for every wrong answer in both Preliminary and Main exams. Un-attempted questions carry no penalty. In case of a tie, the candidate senior most in age is placed higher. With the Preliminary Exam on 27 August 2026, put these last days into focused revision and mock tests — our exam syllabus and pattern guides will help you prioritise. Online Pre-Examination Training is also available for SC, ST, OBC (NCL) and PwBD candidates.
