What is the Selection Process for UPSC ESE 2027?

StageDetail
Stage I: Preliminary ExamObjective type, 500 marks. About 6 to 7 times the vacancies go to Mains. Marks count in final merit
Stage II: Main ExamConventional type, 600 marks
Stage III: Personality Test200 marks, no minimum qualifying marks. About twice the vacancies are called
Medical ExaminationFor finally recommended candidates
PaperDurationMarks
Prelims Paper I: General Studies & Engineering Aptitude2 hours200
Prelims Paper II: Engineering Discipline3 hours300
Mains Paper I: Engineering Discipline3 hours300
Mains Paper II: Engineering Discipline3 hours300

There is negative marking in objective papers: one-third of a question’s marks is deducted for each wrong answer, and multiple answers count as wrong. Blank questions carry no penalty. You need minimum qualifying marks in both Prelims papers. Question papers are in English only. Original documents are verified only after you qualify for the Personality Test. Since Prelims marks are added to your final merit, do not treat Stage I as just a screening test. Start early with the ESE syllabus and exam pattern guides.
