TNPSC Group 4 Eligibility Criteria 2025
Candidates must ensure they meet all eligibility conditions before applying. Eligibility is determined as of the notification date (25.04.2025) for qualifications and 01.07.2025 for age.
Educational Qualification (as on 25.04.2025)
- Minimum General Educational Qualification: Most posts require a pass in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Examination (10th Standard) or its equivalent.
- Higher Secondary: 12th Pass / Higher Secondary Required for Forest Guard posts (with specific subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Zoology, or Botany).
- Degree: Required for posts like Junior Executive (Office), Junior Assistant cum Typist (Labour Studies), Typist (CMDA), Steno Typist (Grade III – Various Depts.), Personal Clerk, Assistant (TNPCB). The degree should follow the 10+2+3 pattern.
- Technical Qualifications:
- Typist Posts: Require specific Government Technical Examination passes in Typewriting (Higher/Senior Grade and Lower/Junior Grade in Tamil and English, specific combinations vary by post).
- Steno-Typist Posts: Require specific Government Technical Examination passes in both Typewriting and Shorthand (Higher/Senior Grade and Lower/Junior Grade in Tamil and English, specific combinations vary by post).
- Computer on Office Automation: A pass in the Certificate Course conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education is required for several posts (Typist, Steno-Typist, Junior Executive, Assistant). Candidates with specific Computer Science/IT related Degrees/Diplomas are exempted. For some posts, this can be acquired within the probation period.
- Co-operative Training: Required for Junior Executive (Office) post. Specific exemptions apply for certain degree holders.
- Driving Licence & Experience: Required for Forest Guard with Driving Licence post (valid licence, 3 years experience in LMV/HMV, basic automobile mechanism knowledge, first aid certificate).
- Knowledge of Tamil: Candidates must possess adequate knowledge of Tamil. This is generally met by passing SSLC/HSC/Degree with Tamil as a language or studying in Tamil medium.
Age Limit (as on 01.07.2025)
- Minimum Age: 18 years for most posts; 21 years for VAO and Forest Watcher posts.

- Maximum Age (SC/SC(A)/ST/MBC/DC/BC/BCM Categories):
- VAO: 42 years
- Forest Guard/Watcher Posts: 37 years
- Other Posts: 34 years (BC/BCM/MBC/DC), 37 years (SC/SC(A)/ST).
- No Maximum Age Limit: For SC/SC(A)/ST/MBC/DC/BC/BCM candidates possessing a qualification higher than the minimum required for posts other than VAO and Forest roles. ‘No maximum age limit’ means the candidate should not have completed 60 years.
- Age Concessions:
- Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD): 10 years concession over the maximum age limit. (Not applicable for Forest Guard/Watcher posts where PwBD eligibility is limited).
- Ex-Servicemen: Maximum age is 50 years (‘Others’) or 55 years (Reserved Categories). For Forest posts, the period of service is deducted, and the resulting age should not exceed 32 (‘Others’) or 37 (Reserved). This concession doesn’t apply if already recruited into any government service.
- Destitute Widow: Maximum age is 37 years (‘Others’) or respective category limit (42/37 years) for reserved categories.
Physical & Medical Standards
- General Posts: Require a certificate of physical fitness (Standard III vision or better) at the time of joining.
- Forest Guard/Watcher Posts: Minimum physical standards are mandatory:
- Male: Height 163cm (152cm ST), Chest 79cm (normal) with 5cm expansion.
- Female/Third Gender: Height 150cm (145cm ST), Chest 74cm (normal) with 5cm expansion.
- A certificate from a government medical officer is required.
- Forest Guard with Driving Licence: Specific vision standards (6/6 distance, 0.5 near vision without glasses, full field of vision) are required. Colour blindness, squint, or Lasik surgery are disqualifications. An Eye Fitness Certificate is needed.

TNPSC Group 4 Salary & Benefits (Pay Scale)
Selected candidates will be placed in different pay levels as per the Tamil Nadu government norms. The pay levels range from Level 3 to Level 10, associated with either the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) or Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) depending on the post and organization.
- Level 10: Steno Typist (Grade III)

TNPSC Group 4 Selection Process 2025
The selection process involves the following stages:
- Written Examination: A single objective-type (OMR-based) examination consisting of three parts.
- Part A: Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test (SSLC Standard, 100 questions, 150 marks). Minimum 40% (60 marks) required to evaluate Part B & C. (Differently Abled candidates can opt for General English instead).
- Part B: General Studies (SSLC Standard, 75 questions).
- Part C: Aptitude and Mental Ability Test (SSLC Standard, 25 questions).
- Total: 200 questions, 300 marks, 3 hours duration. Minimum 90 marks required for selection consideration.
- Ranking: A merit list is prepared based on total marks in the written exam (Parts A+B+C). Tie-breaking rules involving qualifications and age apply.
- Onscreen Certificate Verification: Shortlisted candidates (based on marks and reservation) upload documents for online verification. Ratios vary by post group (e.g., 1:3/1:2 for VAO/JA/Typist/Steno, 1:6 for Forest posts).
- Physical Standards & Endurance Test (for Forest Posts Only): Candidates opting for and eligible after onscreen verification for Forest Guard/Watcher posts undergo physical standard measurement and an endurance test (walk of 25 km for males, 16 km for females/third gender in 4 hours) conducted in Chennai.
- Physical Certificate Verification: Candidates are called based on ranks and reservation rules for verification of original documents. Ratios vary (e.g., 1:3/1:1.5 for VAO/JA/Steno, 1:3/1:2 for Typist/Watcher, 1:1.2/1:1.1 for Forest Guard).
- Counselling: Eligible candidates attend counselling based on their rank for final post and department allotment. Preference orders apply for Typist and Steno-Typist selections based on specific higher/lower grade qualifications in Tamil/English typing/shorthand.
How to Apply for TNPSC Group 4 Recruitment 2025
Follow these steps to apply online:
- One Time Registration (OTR): If not already registered, candidates must first complete the OTR process on the TNPSC portal. The OTR fee is Rs. 150 and is valid for 5 years. Keep scanned copies of your recent photograph and signature ready as per specifications. Linking Aadhaar is mandatory.
- Login & Application: Log in using your OTR credentials on tnpscexams.in. Click “Apply” against the Group 4 notification.
- Fill Details: Verify OTR details and fill in the additional information required for the Group 4 application. Select post preferences carefully (e.g., All Posts, Posts other than Forest roles). Choose preferred examination centres (two options, one for PwBD).
- Upload Documents: Upload a recent photograph (taken on or after notification date, with name and date printed) and signature in the specified format and size. Other documents need to be uploaded later when called for.
- Fee Payment: Pay the examination fee of Rs. 100 online (Net Banking/Card/UPI) unless claiming exemption. Check eligibility for fee concession (SC/ST, PwBD, DW, Ex-Servicemen, BC/MBC) before claiming.
