What are the Key Highlights of UPSC Geo Scientist Final Result 2026?
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Organisation | Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) |
| Exam | Combined Geo-Scientist Examination, 2026 |
| Result Type | Final result (press note with merit lists) |
| Result Date | 16 October 2026 |

| Candidates Recommended | 66 (sum of the tables in the PDF) |
| Stages Covered | Preliminary, Main and Personality Test |
| Official Website | upsc.gov.in |
The PDF does not print a grand total for vacancies or for recommended candidates. The 69 and 66 above come from adding the post-wise tables.
This result is the end of a three-stage journey: the Preliminary exam in February, the Main exam in June and the Personality Test in September. The lists are based on the results of these stages, and the names are in order of merit. You can also see all exam results on GovtJobsAlert.in.
How Many Vacancies Were Reported Post-Wise?
The Government reported these vacancies to UPSC. Category columns are in the order GEN, EWS, OBC, SC, ST.
| Post | Category-wise Vacancies | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Geologist, Group ‘A’ | 10 / 1 / 6 / 3 / 1 | 21 |
| Scientist ‘B’ (Hydrogeology), Group ‘A’ | 3 / 0 / 1 / 1 / 0 | 5 |

| Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical), Group ‘A’ | 1 / 0 / 1 / 0 / 0 | 2 |
| Assistant Chemist, Group ‘B’ | 2 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 | 2 |
The 21 Geologist vacancies include 04 PwBD-1 (backlog) and 05 PwBD-3 (of which 04 are backlog). PwBD-1 means locomotor disability, including cerebral palsy, cured leprosy, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy. PwBD-3 means deaf and hard of hearing.
How Many Candidates Are Recommended for Each Post?
UPSC has recommended candidates stream-wise. For Hydrogeology and Geophysics, one combined merit list covers all the posts in that stream, so the PDF does not split the names between Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’.
| Stream | Vacancies Reported | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Geologist, Group ‘A’ | 21 | 20 |
| Hydrogeology (Scientist ‘B’ / Assistant Hydrogeologist) | 23 | 22 |
| Geophysics (Geophysicist / Scientist ‘B’ / Assistant Geophysicist) | 5 | 4 |
| Chemist, Group ‘A’ | 16 | 16 |
| Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical), Group ‘A’ | 2 | 2 |
| Assistant Chemist, Group ‘B’ | 2 | 2 |
Here is the category-wise split of those recommended names, in the order GEN, EWS, OBC, SC, ST.
| Stream | Category-wise Recommended | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Geologist, Group ‘A’ | 9 / 1 / 6 / 3 / 1 | 20 |
| Hydrogeology stream | 10 / 2 / 5 / 4 / 1 | 22 |
| Geophysics stream | 3 / 0 / 1 / 0 / 0 | 4 |
| Chemist, Group ‘A’ | 7 / 1 / 5 / 2 / 1 | 16 |
| Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical) | 1 / 0 / 1 / 0 / 0 | 2 |
| Assistant Chemist, Group ‘B’ | 2 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 | 2 |
Important Notes Under the Result Table
Do not skip these footnotes. They explain why some numbers do not match line by line.
| Note | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Geologist figure of 20 | The GEN figure of 9 includes 06 PwBD-1 and 01 PwBD-3. OBC 6 includes 01 PwBD-1. The 20 includes 07 PwBD-1 and 01 PwBD-3 |
| PwBD-3 vacancy carried forward | No PwBD-3 candidate was available, so 01 current-year PwBD-3 vacancy will be carried forward to the next recruitment year, as per the DoPT OM dated 15/01/2018 |
| Geophysics OBC candidate | 01 OBC candidate will be considered against Unreserved vacancies |
| Chemist GEN figure of 7 | It includes 01 EWS candidate at general standards |
Read the Geologist row with care. The recommended figure is 20 against the 21 reported only because of that one PwBD-3 seat.
The Hydrogeology and Geophysics streams also show one fewer name than the vacancies reported (22 against 23, and 4 against 5). The PDF gives no reason for this, so we do not guess. Chemist, Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical) and Assistant Chemist are filled to the number reported.
Is There a Reserve List for Geo-Scientist 2026?
Yes. Under Rule 16 of the examination rules, UPSC has kept a consolidated reserve list for two streams.
| Stream | Reserve List |
|---|---|
| Scientist ‘B’ (Hydrogeology) / Assistant Hydrogeologist | GEN 1, OBC 1 (total 2) |
| Geophysicist / Scientist ‘B’ (Geophysics) / Assistant Geophysicist | GEN 1, OBC 1 (total 2) |
This list gives only category counts, not names. A reserve list is simply a waiting list kept by the Commission under its rules. The PDF does not say how or when a reserve candidate would be called and does not name the reserve candidates, so do not assume anything beyond what UPSC has published.
Which Roll Numbers Have a Provisional Result?
Six recommended roll numbers have a provisional result.
| Stream | Provisional Roll Numbers |
|---|---|
| Geologist, Group ‘A’ | 0690249 |
| Hydrogeology stream | 0790515, 0790971, 0990228 |
| Geophysics stream | 0290194 |
| Chemist, Group ‘A’ | 0691071 |
For these candidates, the offer of appointment will not be issued until the original documents awaited from them are verified. The provisional status stays valid for only three months from the date of declaration of the final result. If the documents are not submitted in that period, the candidature will be cancelled and no further correspondence will be entertained.
A provisional result does not mean you have failed. It only means UPSC is still waiting for original documents from you, and the offer of appointment is held back until they are checked. Candidates in the other lists are also covered by the general rule that appointment depends on verification, so keep every original certificate ready.
If your roll number is in this table, do not wait. Send the documents UPSC is waiting for as early as you can and keep proof of submission.
What Was the Selection Process for UPSC Geo Scientist 2026?
| Stage | Detail |
|---|---|
| Stage-I (Preliminary) | Held on 8 February 2026 |
| Stage-II (Main) | Held on 20 and 21 June 2026 |
| Personality Test | Held in September 2026 |
The final lists are based on the results of these stages, as the press note states. The PDF does not describe marks, weightage or cut-offs, and it says marks are likely to be put on the website within fifteen days.
What Happens After the Final Result?
| Stage | Detail |
|---|---|
| Appointment | Made by the Government according to the number of vacancies available |
| Eligibility | Appointment is subject to the candidate fulfilling all prescribed eligibility conditions |
| Verification | All pre-appointment formalities and verifications must be completed satisfactorily, wherever due |
| Allotment | Done as per merit position and the preference of services or posts you opted for |
| Marks | Likely to be on the UPSC website within fifteen days from the date the result was published |
Being on the list is a recommendation, not an appointment letter. The Government decides on the appointment, and it can happen only if you clear the eligibility and verification checks. Your preference order and your rank together decide which post you are allotted. Plan your next steps with this in mind. Keep an eye on the exam calendar on GovtJobsAlert.in for your next target.
