Eligibility Criteria for TNPSC Combined Technical Services Exam

Candidates must ensure they fulfill all eligibility conditions before applying. The key eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • Age Limit (as on 01.07.2025): Candidates should have completed 21 years of age. The maximum age limit varies by post and category.
    • Others (Candidates not belonging to SCs, SC(A)s, STS, MBCs/DCs, BC(OBCM)s and BCMs): The maximum age ranges from 32 to 40 years depending on the post. Age concessions are applicable for Persons with Benchmark Disability, Ex-Servicemen, and Destitute Widows as per rules. For some posts, there is no maximum age limit for certain categories. 
    • BC (OBCM)s, BCMS, MBCs/DCs, SCS, SC(A)s and STs: Generally, there is no maximum age limit for most posts for these categories. However, for specific posts like Scientist ‘C’ Grade and Assistant Planner, age limits apply. Age concessions for Persons with Benchmark Disability, Ex-Servicemen, and Destitute Widows are also applicable. 
    • “No maximum age limit” means candidates should not have completed 60 years of age as on 01.07.2025 or at the time of selection/appointment. 
  • Educational Qualification, Technical Qualification, and Experience: These vary significantly by post and are detailed in the official notification provided below. Candidates should possess the prescribed qualifications as of the date of the notification. The qualifications must have been obtained in the specified order of studies (SSLC + HSC/Diploma + UG Degree + PG Degree + Ph.D. Degree). Experience, where required, must have been acquired after obtaining the prescribed educational qualification. 
    • For example, the Deputy Director (Legal) requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Law and 15 years of legal experience. The Veterinary Assistant Surgeon requires a B.V.Sc. Degree / B.V.Sc. & A.H. and registration with the Tamil Nadu State Veterinary Council. 
  • Knowledge in Tamil: Candidates should possess adequate knowledge of Tamil as of the date of the notification. This is generally evidenced by passing SSLC/HSC/Degree with Tamil as a language or studying in Tamil medium.

Selection Process

The selection process for the TNPSC Combined Technical Services Examination involves two main stages: 

  1. Written Examination: This will consist of two papers.
    • Paper I:
      • Part A: Tamil Eligibility Test (SSLC Standard) – 100 questions, 150 marks (qualifying in nature, minimum 60 marks required). 
      • Part B: General Studies (Degree Standard) – 75 questions. 
      • Part C: Aptitude and Mental Ability (SSLC Standard) – 25 questions. 
      • Total for Part B & C: 150 marks. Duration: 3 hours. 
    • Paper II: Subject Paper (Degree/PG Degree/Diploma Standard, depending on the post) – 200 questions, 300 marks. Duration: 3 hours. (For Tamil Reporter and English Reporter, Paper II is 1.5 hours for 100 marks). 
    • The examination will be conducted as a Computer Based Test (CBT). 
  2. Interview: Candidates who qualify in the written examination will be called for an interview. The interview is for 60 marks. 

Final Selection: The final selection will be based on the total marks obtained in Part B and Part C of Paper I, Paper II, and the Interview, subject to the rule of reservation of appointments. Appearance in both papers of the written examination and the interview is compulsory. 

Certificate Verification: Onscreen certificate verification will be conducted before admission to physical certificate verification and interview. 

How to Apply for TNPSC Combined Technical Services Exam 2025

Candidates must apply online through the TNPSC’s official website. Follow these steps:

  1. One Time Registration (OTR): If you are a new user, you must first register under the One Time Registration (OTR) platform on the Commission’s website by paying a registration fee of Rs. 150/-. This registration is valid for five years. Keep scanned images of your photograph and signature ready as per the prescribed format. Linking Aadhaar with OTR is mandatory. 
  2. Online Application:
    • If already registered, log in with your User ID and Password. 
    • Click “APPLY” against the Combined Technical Services Examination notification on the Commission’s website. 
    • Fill in all the required details carefully. The information from your OTR will be auto-filled; verify it and update if necessary before submitting the application. 
    • Upload a recent photograph taken on or after the date of notification. 
    • Choose your preferred examination centres. 
    • Upload all necessary documents as proof for your claims regarding age, educational qualification, experience, community, PSTM, disability, etc. 
  3. Application Fee Payment: Pay the examination fee online.
  4. Application Correction Window: An application correction window will be available from 15.06.2025 to 17.06.2025 for any modifications. 
  5. Submission: Review your application thoroughly before final submission. 

Application Fees

  • Registration Fee: Rs. 150/- for One Time Registration (valid for 5 years). 
  • Examination Fee: Rs. 200/-. 
  • For every additional subject paper opted by the candidate, Rs. 200/- for each subject paper should be paid additionally. 
  • Fee Concessions:
    • Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Caste (Arunthathiyars) / Scheduled Tribes: Full Exemption. 
    • Persons with Benchmark Disability: Full Exemption. 
    • Destitute Widows: Full Exemption. 
    • Backward Classes (Other than Muslim) / Backward Classes (Muslim) / Most Backward Classes / Denotified Communities: Three free chances. 
    • Ex-Servicemen: Two free chances. Candidates must carefully choose the fee concession option in the application.
