The selection has two clear stages — first a Qualifying Shorthand Test, and then a Main Examination with two papers. You must clear each stage to move ahead. You can check the general exam pattern and syllabus to plan your preparation well.

Stage 1: Qualifying Test (Shorthand Test)

In this test, a 2-minute English passage is dictated in shorthand at a speed of 80 words per minute. Its only purpose is to check whether you have the basic shorthand skill. Candidates who show the required skill are declared eligible for the Main Examination, so this stage is qualifying in nature.

Stage 2: Main Examination — Paper 1

Paper-1 (Language Proficiency and Computer Knowledge) carries 100 marks and lasts 2 hours (120 minutes). It is a mix of descriptive and objective questions:

  • Essay Writing (Descriptive) – 10 marks
  • Précis Writing (Descriptive) – 10 marks
  • Letter Writing, two letters (Descriptive) – 20 marks
  • Gujarati to English Translation (Descriptive) – 10 marks
  • English to Gujarati Translation (Descriptive) – 10 marks
  • English Grammar (Objective) – 20 marks
  • Basic Computer Knowledge and Operations (Objective) – 20 marks

Stage 2: Main Examination — Paper 2 (Skill Test)

Paper-2 (Skill Test) also carries 100 marks. Here your shorthand and transcription typing are tested:

  • Dictation is given in English shorthand at 100 words per minute.
  • Two passages of 4 minutes each are dictated (total 8 minutes).
  • You then type out the transcription on a computer within a time limit of 50 minutes.
  • Shorthand written in longhand is not accepted.

Marking and Qualifying Standard

For Paper-2, one mark is cut for every 3 mistakes in the transcription, and the passing standard is 50 marks. For Paper-1, the minimum qualifying score is 40 marks. The final merit list is prepared on the basis of the combined marks of both papers, out of 200 marks.
