Eligibility Criteria for Bihar Forest Range Officer
Candidates must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the Forest Range Officer post:
- Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen. Men, women, and third-gender individuals can apply.
- Educational Qualification (as on 01.01.2025):
- A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or equivalent with at least one of the following subjects: Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and Zoology OR, a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Forestry, or Engineering.
- Age Limit (as on 01.01.2025):
- Minimum Age: 21 years for all categories.
- Maximum Age (UR – Male): 37 years.
- Maximum Age (UR – Female): 40 years.
- Maximum Age (BC/EBC – Male/Female/Third Gender): 40 years.
- Maximum Age (SC/ST – Male/Female): 42 years.
- Note: Age relaxation is applicable for Bihar Government employees (5 years) and Ex-Servicemen as per rules. The maximum age limit calculation reference date can also be considered as 01.08.2021 for candidates who met the criteria then.

Salary & Benefits: Forest Range Officer Pay Scale
Selected candidates for the post of Forest Range Officer will be placed in Pay Level-6, with a pay scale of ₹35,400 – ₹1,12,400. Additional allowances and benefits will be applicable as per Bihar Government rules.
Selection Process for Bihar Forest Range Officer
The selection process involves multiple stages:
- Written Examination:
- Paper I (General Hindi): 100 marks, 50 MCQs, 1 hour duration. Minimum qualifying marks: 30%. Marks not counted for merit list. Negative marking: 0.2 marks for each wrong answer.
- Paper II (General Studies): 300 marks, 100 MCQs, 2 hours duration. Questions cover General Knowledge, Current Affairs, General Science, Civics, Indian History, Indian Geography, Mathematics, and Mental Ability. Negative marking: 0.3 marks for each wrong answer.
- Interview: Candidates qualifying the written exam (6 times the number of vacancies, category-wise) will be called for an interview. The interview carries 50 marks and assesses personality and suitability for the role.
- Physical Efficiency Test (PET) / Physical Standard Test (PST): Candidates invited for the interview must undergo a Physical Endurance Test. This includes:
- Male: Walking 25 km in 4 hours.
- Female: Walking 14 km in 4 hours.
- Physical standards (Height/Chest) will also be verified. Failure in the PET leads to disqualification.
- Medical Examination: Candidates successful in the PET will undergo a medical examination by a board constituted by the Commission. Candidates must be mentally and physically fit.
- Merit List: The final merit list will be prepared based on the combined marks obtained in the Written Examination (Paper II) and the Interview. Tie-breaking rules based on age, educational qualification, and name order will apply if needed. Minimum qualifying marks in the written test apply category-wise.
